What’s being done to protect children?
- February 18, 2022
Following a case in Florida involving the arrest of a school bus driver in connection with child sexual abuse material, CRC was asked to provide input to a news channel and explain more about the nature of these crimes.
Our COO, Glen Pounder, filled in the details about information provided by technology companies to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) who pass these tips to law enforcement around the country and around the world for investigation.
In a case where the information indicates the suspect has a job working with children a higher priority is given to the investigation so that police can investigate whether children are in danger.
In 2021 NCMEC received a record 29 million tips from technology companies. This number could and perhaps should be higher – some companies don’t look for child sexual abuse material being traded on their networks. By law they don’t have to look for these illegal images and videos, but they must send details to NCMEC if they find it themselves or it’s reported to them.
