National Operation Combats Pedophilia in Brazil

Fourth phase of ‘Light in Childhood’, launched by the Ministry of Justice with the civilian police of the states, investigates crimes of abuse and sexual exploitation against children and adolescents on the Internet.

The Ministry of Justice and the civilian police of the states launched on Thursday (28) the 4th phase of Operation Light in Childhood, which investigates crimes of abuse and sexual exploitation against children and adolescents practiced on the Internet. Crimes of storage, sharing and production of child pornography are investigated.

In all, 141 people were arrested, according to a report released on Friday (29) by the Ministry of Justice.

Civilian police had 266 search and seizure warrants to file in the 26 states and the Federal District. Although there were no arrest warrants, the suspects of storage and sharing of material found in the houses where they were searched were arrested in flagrante.

Most of the arrests occurred in the states of São Paulo and Goiás ( see state prison prisons at the end of the report ). 

The 4th phase of the operation involves 133 cities and is coordinated by the Secretariat of Integrated Operations of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. More than 1,500 police officers participated in the search.

The penalties for the crimes investigated range from 1 to 8 years in prison. Whoever stores child pornography material has a penalty of 1 to 4 years in prison. For those who share, the penalty is 3 to 6 years in prison.Punishment increases to 4 to 8 years in prison for those who produce this kind of material.
