Before They Log On: 4 Tips to Make Summer Safer

This summer, Child Rescue Coalition is launching the CRC Summer of Safety, a season-long initiative to help families protect children from online predators during their most screen-filled months.

Summer brings a shift in routines: later bedtimes, relaxed schedules, and a lot more time spent online. But while kids are logging on more, so are predators. At Child Rescue Coalition, we’re here to help parents stay one step ahead.

To guide you through the season, CRC CEO Greg Schiller is sharing four critical safety tips every family should know. These are small, meaningful steps that can make a big difference in keeping your child safe online.

 1. Monitor the apps and games that your child is playing

If an app or game allows your child to receive communication from strangers or share their location, make sure you turn those features off or don’t allow use of the app or game. Take control.

2. Our devices are constantly sharing our location

When we share photos and videos our location is likewise shared. This can be turned off in the settings app on your device. When predators get photos of our children with their location, they can find our children.

3. Often, predators will seek to communicate with our children late at night

A pro tip is to keep all Internet connected devices out of your child’s room while they are sleeping.

4. Make sure your child knows how to report an Internet crime against them to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

Together, you and your child visit and know how to use the CyberTipline.

Keep These Tips Handy All Summer

Online safety isn’t a one-time talk. It’s an ongoing, age-appropriate conversation that helps your child build confidence and awareness. We’ve made it easier with a printable cheat sheet you can hang on the fridge or keep handy all summer long.
