Alleged Sex Predator’s List of Victims Grows

POOLER, GA – The number of victims is now at 21 and potentially climbing in the investigation into an alleged sex predator living and working in our area. Matthew Coniglio killed himself in prison, just two weeks after being arrested for possession and distributing child pornography.

During the search of Congilio’s Pooler home, detectives found videos of Coniglio having sex with unconscious girls, some as young as 13 years old. One of those victims is from Beaufort County, and has come forward to talk to investigators. Coniglio also worked in food distribution, and lived in Savannah, Hilton Head, Bluffton, Pooler, Charleston, North Charleston and Kingwood, Texas.

If you can help the investigation, or think you might have been one of Matthew Coniglio’s victims, contact Pooler Police at (912)748-7333, or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. The FBI has now opened a hotline for victims or anyone with information about alleged sex predator Matthew Coniglio.

Coniglio committed suicide last month after Pooler police detectives say they found flash drives, DVD’s, and tapes of him having sex with unconscious girls, some underage, as young as 13. Coniglio lived and worked in Hilton Head, Bluffton, Savannah, Charleston, North Charleston and Kingwood, Texas in the last 10-15 years. Investigators believe there could be victims from any of those areas, and may not have known they were victims. Already several people have come forward, including at least one victim. That woman was apparently from Beaufort County.

If you think you might have been a victim, or can help Pooler Police or the FBI with their investigation, call 1-800-CALL-FBI or 1-800-225-5324. There will be a live agent to speak to about the Matthew Coniglio case. Several people have already come forward since News 3’s investigation into a Pooler Sex Predator on Monday.

Pooler investigators and the FBI are asking for Matthew Coniglio’s victims or co-workers to come forward as they continue the investigation. The FBI will also set up a national hotline as soon as Wednesday. WSAV Crime Expert Gerry Long says this investigation won’t be easy, for victims or investigators.

“People may not have reported it at the time but realize in fact this is the person and come forward,” explained Long. “They may say this person is always in this restaurant or bar or night club and that may lead to more case they’ll be able to resolve.” “By the time a victim comes forward, makes a complaint and an investigation begins in reference to a sexual encounter, that person could be moved, could see the end of a cycle in that location and the investigation begins and the predator is gone.” “They also have the video tapes and have that evidence which may lead to a little something in terms of background of what time its is. Not time of day but what year it is for a time stamp. Narrow down what location it is.”

Matthew Coniglio lived and worked in Savannah, Hilton Head, Bluffton, Charleston and North Charleston as well as Kingwood, Texas in the last 10-15 years. If you knew Matthew Coniglio or believe you knew one of his victims, who were as young as age 12, call your local law enforcement agency or Pooler Police at (912)748-7333.

It began as an investigation into computer crimes, but soon uncovered a sexual predator. Pooler police spoke only to News 3 about this case. Six cities, three states at least 15 victims.

It’s a case that started in Pooler but has turned into much more. Back in march the investigation began into Matthew Coniglio. Detectives say Coniglio was downloading and sharing child pornography. Two weeks ago, in early April, Pooler Police got a search warrant and went inside his home. There they found laptops, CD’s, Super 8 tapes, and flash drives full of videos. Those videos, detectives say contained videos of Coniglio having sex with underage girls.

“We believe some of these women may not have made police reports,” explained Pooler Police Detective John Schmitt. “Some may not even know they are victims of this crime because of that nature of what we found on these videos.” Investigators say the videos come from as far back as 10-15 years ago.

Because Conglio’s job as a food distribution sales representative allowed him to move around a lot, they believe there could be victims from Savannah, Bluffton, Hilton Head, Charleston and North Charleston and even Kingwood, texas. Coniglio killed himself inside the Chatham County Jail Sunday night, but investigators say that will not stop the search for victims, and justice.

“You are speaking for these victims as well as those victims we now realize were being possibly sexually assaulted by Mr Coniglio,” explained Detective Schmitt. “People think they are anonymous and they think they can hide behind a screen name and an IP address,” says Pooler Chief Mark Revenew. “Its very clear they are out there. We are going to find them.” “We’re still just breaking into this investigation, still have a lot to learn,” said Schmitt. “And hopefully we start to identify the victims, they start coming forward, we can figure out how he was operating, what he was doing.”

If you knew Matthew Coniglio or think you knew one of his victims, please call your local police or Sheriff’s department or Pooler Police right away. Pooler Police’s phone number is (912) 748-7333. Right now investigators believe there are at least 15 victims, and possibly many more.

The GBI and FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force is also involved in this investigation, and expect to start a national search for victims in the next few days.
